KITES

KITES

Flim:Kites Director: Anurag Basu Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Barbara Mori, Kangana Ranaut
What: Two people who don't speak common language fall in love
Why: Hrithik's home production by the man who made Life in a...Metro.
Kites is an intense romance with the kites in the title representing the meeting of two lovers who are then set adrift by circumstances much like kites are wont to do when being flown by experts. It seems a bit of a stretch but then there's no accounting for producer's fancies especially when the name has to necessarily start with a K.

Michael Moore has titled his upcoming documentary Capitalism: A Love Story, which addresses the causes of the global economic meltdown, reports Variety.

"It will be the perfect date movie," Moore said in an announcement Wednesday. "It's got it all -- lust, passion, romance and 14,000 jobs being eliminated every day. It's a forbidden love, one that dare not speak its name. Heck, let's just say it: It's capitalism."

The film is described as focusing on "the disastrous impact that corporate dominance and out-of-control profit motives have on the lives of Americans and citizens of the world."

Moore has made three of the top six highest-grossing documentaries -- Fahrenheit 9/11, Sicko and Bowling for Columbine.

Warner Bros. and DC Comics Win Superman Case

Warner Bros. and DC Comics Win Superman Case

Variety reports that Warner Bros. and DC Comics have won a favorable ruling in the suit filed by the heirs of "Superman" co-creator Jerome Siegel. Here are some excerpts from the ruling:

In a decision announced Wednesday, U.S. Judge District Court Judge Stephen G. Larson found that the license fees the studio paid to corporate sibling DC Comics didn't represent "sweetheart" deals as they weren't below fair market value. That means the heirs will be able seek profits only from DC Comics -- which earned $13.6 million from Warner Bros. for the 2006 release of "Superman Returns" -- rather than from Warner Bros. as well.

The judge, who conducted a 10-day bench trial, also noted that Warner Bros. chairman Alan Horn had testified that he hopes to make another "Superman" movie but added that the property wasn't under development at the studio, that no script had been written and that the earliest another "Superman" pic could be released would be in 2012.

Toberoff also asserted in a written statement that the Siegel heirs and the heirs of co-creator Joe Shuster will own the entire Superman copyright in 2013.

"The Court pointedly ruled that if Warner Bros. does not start production on another Superman film by 2011, the Siegels will be able to sue to recover their damages," Toberoff added.

Directed by Larry Charles

Summary:
Even more insane and hysterical than "Borat," Sacha Baron Cohen's hilarious follow-up is also far more coherent and effective at using shock factor to get you laughing.

Story:
19-year-old Austrian supermodel BrĂ¼no (Sacha Baron Cohen) has been fired from hosting his talk show after a runway incident, so he travels to Hollywood with his trusty assistant Lutz (Gustaf Hammarstein) in hopes of becoming a celebrity.

Analysis:
As one of the few people none-too-thrilled by Sacha Baron Cohen's weak attempt at using humor in "Borat" to comment on misogyny and anti-Semitism not only in Eastern European stereotypes but in Americans as well, I was skeptical that Cohen could convince me there was more to his gay Austrian supermodel BrĂ¼no that would warrant a feature-length film. After all, we've seen far too many times how characters created for TV skits (which is essentially Cohen's forte) rarely work in a longer form. Wisely, I had familiarized myself more with Cohen's gay supermodel character from that earlier experience, so I was familiar with his schtick and how he uses it to expose homophobia in the most banal places.

Cohen has clearly had more time to develop BrĂ¼no and figure out the best way to use him in a story that encompasses a variety of different in-character pranks, and fortunately, a lot of them involve more than the character just acting dumb due to unfamiliarity with U.S. customs and traditions. This movie follows BrĂ¼no's journey to Hollywood, accompanied by his adoring assistant Lutz, in hopes of starting fresh and becoming a celebrity.

To some, it might seem obvious why this movie would have GLADD up in arms once they realized the straight British comic would be playing a flamboyantly gay character for an entire film, presumably solidifying negative stereotypes within his mostly straight male audience. In fact, Cohen is once again using an exaggerated caricature as a way to get the people he meets and interviews to let down their guard and show there's a lot of homophobia in play in our country. (Not that anyone needs be reminded of this based on the inability for our government to agree on supporting those with alternate lifestyles.)

But the movie isn't just about BrĂ¼no's sexuality, and the "gay stuff" doesn't really come into play until about halfway through the movie. Up until that point, it's more about outing stupid people in the industry who don't understand that they shouldn't say ridiculously dumb and offensive things while on camera. In an early segment, BrĂ¼no convinces Paula Abdul to talk about her humanitarian work while sitting on the human furniture courtesy of his Mexican gardeners. (The bit that followed with LaToya Jackson has been cut from the final version.) In another bit, he convinces stage parents to allow their young babies to be shot doing unspeakable things, all for the sake of "show biz." You might almost be embarrassed laughing at how these parents don't even hesitate before agreeing. BrĂ¼no's own attempts at adopting a black baby doesn't go well. While it's always fun to watch Cohen put celebrities and political figures on the hot seat, the best bits are when he's out in public, deliberately making a fool of himself in order to get a reaction from whomever he can. There does seem to be a little bit of staged fakery to help wrap some of those scenes up, but no more or less than in "Borat."

Over the last few months, you've probably heard about some of BrĂ¼no's exploits from various news outlets, but you may be surprised how some of them are used within the context of the story, especially the final prank where Cohen fights another man in a steel cage, only for them to start ripping off their clothes and making out, something that doesn't go over well with the mostly male Arkansas audience. There's quite a bit of male frontal nudity and a number of outrageous sex scenes, the latter mostly done to amuse, although you'll probably be thankful a lot of the most graphic portions have been blurred out. The only real weak moment compared to the rest of the movie is the "We Are the World" number that closes the movie complete with all of the usual suspects (Sting, Bono, Elton John) lending their voices. It just doesn't seem as clever or original as some of Cohen's other ideas.

The plot itself isn't exactly "War and Peace," essentially leading to Cohen's character having an altercation with his travel partner and it culminating in a number of equally hilarious situations. After he splits with Lutz, BrĂ¼no decides that the only way for him to become famous is by being straight, so he goes to a series of Christian "converters" who seem nonplussed by the challenge of turning BrĂ¼no straight. This is where the film starts to really take off as Cohen starts playing with how far he can take the stereotype, whether it's mouthing off at an army boot camp, attending a swingers' party where he convinces a straight man to show him some sex moves, and he even takes part in a martial arts demonstration where he gets a straight-laced instructor to show him the defensive arts against a variety of dildos. It's all very funny stuff, because you're in on the joke while everyone else tries their best to take his character seriously despite his insane actions and requests.

Third time is the charm for director Larry Charles who finds clever and inventive ways to tie all the vignettes together using music and sound FX, making this a much funnier film than both "Borat" and "Religulous." It doesn't hurt that there's a far more coherent story in play to keep everything glued together, and that Cohen has figured the best way of building a joke over the course of each bit rather than constantly regurgitating the same jokes. Who knows if Cohen went to such great lengths to stay in character for this jaunt as he did while playing Borat, but one has to be impressed with the flawless German, which he speaks through most of the film. (On the other hand, his constant replacement of words like "Ass" with "Auschwitz" does get somewhat tiring.)

Someday, someone will take time to analyze what Cohen does to see why it's so effective at amusing some while at the same time offending others. With "Borat," I made the mistake of assuming Cohen was just an Andy Kaufman or Yakov Smirnoff wannabe, but there's a lot more deliberate thought being put into what he does, making him the thinking man's comedian who doesn't necessarily require a lot of thinking.

The Bottom Line:
The bottom line for any comedy is whether it makes you laugh, and this one had me laughing loudly and almost in tears many times at some of the most insane things I've seen on screen. That's what I'd consider a success. If you're comfortable with your sexuality and not too sensitive about humor done deliberately to shock and offend, you'll be laughing, too.

Directed by David Yates

Summary:
Another accomplished installment in the popular fantasy franchise, though it's hard not to feel like this is little more than an interim piece in the overall story, presumably leading to something much bigger next time around. Or at least let's hope so.

Story:
In his sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) and his friends Ron and Hermione (Rupert Grint, Emma Watson) must contend with the continued threat of Voldemort's Death Eaters, while Professor Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) has brought back the school's old teacher, Professor Horace Slughorn (Jim Broadbent), for reasons only he knows. After his father has been caught and jailed, Harry's arch-nemesis Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) is even more determined to take down his enemy, but Harry, Ron and Hermione seem more concerned with their sudden interest in the opposite sex.

Analysis:
It probably needs to be said as a caveat to this review that "Half-Blood Prince" is the first one of Rowling's novels that I didn't get a chance to read before seeing the movie. That really shouldn't matter, since one presumes that a good portion of the millions who regularly go see these movies won't necessarily have read the books either. It's also obvious from the last movie that the films continue to diverge further and further away from Rowling's novels, but rest assured that if you haven't read the sixth book, this review deliberately omits important plot points as to not spoil the experience.

After a fantastic opening scene in modern-day London of the Death Eaters attacking the Muggle populace, we see Harry enjoying his summer break until Professor Dumbledore shows up to take him back to the safety of Hogwarts. First, they must convince Dumbeldore's former colleague, Jim Broadbent's Professor Horace Slughorn, to return to Hogwarts for reasons Dumbeldore won't reveal. In the meantime, the Death Eaters have been trying to get at Harry--the only person to have survived an attack by their master Voldermort--and everyone at Hogwarts tries to get back to business as normal. Dumbledore asks Harry to become Slughorn's star potions pupil in order to get answers that might help them find Voldemort, while Harry's nemesis Draco Malfoy has been recruited for his own mission by the Death Eaters. Harry has found a special potion book belonging to someone known as the "half-blood prince," and there's a subplot involving something called Liquid Luck. If you're already lost then welcome to the world of J.K. Rowling's over-elaborate plotting and how hard it is to retain all of it when making a film adaptation.

David Yates becomes only the second filmmaker to make two "Harry Potter" movies back-to-back, with this sixth installment also bringing original screenwriter Steve Kloves back to the fold. At this point, if you haven't been religiously watching the movies based on Rowling's tomes, you might as well give up. As much as "Half-Blood Prince" tries to retain the done-in-one aspect of the previous movies, there are just way too many characters from the previous chapters making brief appearances you're not likely to know who anyone is. Instead, the focus is on the evolving relationships between the characters, something that's important to all good filmmaking ventures, but not when it bogs down the forward movement of the story, which is clearly the case here.

The young female members of the cast clearly steal the sixth film, especially Emma Watson's Hermione, whose acting has been consistent and solid throughout the series. By comparison, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint don't seem to have improved very much, although at least Grint is getting away from the Stan Laurel routine he was doing so much in previous movies. There's no explanation for Harry's sudden change in demeanor since the last movie in which he was angry all the time; here, he's quite placid once again despite everything that happened. If someone told me eight years ago that Bonnie Wright, introduced as Ginny Weasley in the first movie, would turn into such a strong dramatic actress who could carry scenes as well as the three leads, I wouldn't have believed it. It's a testament to producer David Heyman and the various directors who've helmed the franchise that these young actors have been able to evolve and develop their characters so much. This movie would have failed miserably if that wasn't the case.

The verbal sparring between Ron and Hermione has played such a large part in the last few movies, and if you didn't realize where their relationship was heading then you've clearly never seen an episode of "Moonlighting." Hermione is finally realizing she has stronger feelings for Ron, who is as oblivious about them as ever, but the movie spends way too much time dealing with this relationship and how others get in the way. As entertaining as all the character interaction continues to be, so much time is spent dealing with the mostly inconsequential romantic relationships of the various characters that it completely overpowers the main plot. Sadly, it feels that the movie is trying too hard to retain the straying young women who have become enamored by the "Twilight" series, rather than remaining true to itself.

As much as the focus remains on the younger cast, this installment is clearly Michael Gambon's moment to shine as Professor Dumbledore after spending a good portion of the last movie in the wings. For the actor to follow the likes of the legendary Richard Harris in the role and make it his own character is quite an achievement. Similarly, Jim Broadbent does a great job filling in as this installment's "special guest," a doddering sycophant who has his own plans for Harry. (Alan Rickman's Severus Snape continues to play an equally large part in Harry's life at Hogwarts, although we can't say much about his role in the movie without spoiling it.) Over the course of the five previous movies, so many characters have been introduced and there's very little for many of them to do in this one, yet many of them make brief appearances in inconsequential scenes that are similarly unnecessary in the overall scheme of things.

Noticeably missing from this chapter is Ralph Fiennes' Voldemort, who played such a large role in elevating the level of menace in the last few movies. We do get to see the former Tom Riddle in his younger guise--one even played by Fiennes' nephew--but the main menace this time is his Death Eaters, who only really appear at the beginning, the end and a few scattered bits in between. For the most part, this chapter seems to be lacking in the epic magical fantasy that was such an important part of the series up until now - there really aren't any magical creatures for instance, and a lot of what happens could just as well have taken place in any episode of "Saved by the Bell," as the film strays from the fact that the story takes place in a school for wizards.

While Rupert Grint has previously been the film's primary comic relief, that honor goes to the duo of Evanna Lynch's Luna Lovegood and Jessie Cave's Lavender Brown--the latter is Ron's ditzy love interest--both of them keeping things light and fun throughout. Another pleasant surprise is the amazing transformation of Tom Felton's Malfoy from a sniveling and unlikable bully into a villain with real potential. Most of the film, we watch him putting things into a cabinet that makes them disappear, for reasons we don't discover for a long time.

By the time we get back to the actual plot, almost two hours have passed, and by then, you might have completely given up on caring who the titular "half-blood prince" is. That makes it the first time in the series you really start feeling the movie's length before the two-hour mark due to the amount of needless filler.

That's not to say Yates doesn't continue to prove himself an accomplished filmmaker, doing a fantastic job with what is evidently the weakest chapter in the series since its debut. He has created another fantastic looking film with a distinct look from its predecessors thanks to the gorgeous cinematography of Bruno Delbanel ("Amelie") while Nicholas Hooper's score continues to make one forget all about John Williams. The quality of their work is most evident in the last twenty minutes, when we finally get the exciting, fantastical climax we've been hoping for, but it takes way too long to get there. To be honest, other than the opening, a brief Quidditch match and the quest by Harry and Dumbeldore's quest to find an important artifact, there's nothing in the sixth movie that necessarily needs to be seen on the larger IMAX screen.

We won't divulge the two or three big revelations, though they're not nearly as groundbreaking as one might hope after having waited eight extra months for a movie that resolves little and doesn't really deliver on many things set-up in the previous movie. Instead, we're left once again with what is essentially a cliffhanger for the next movie, which one can only hope will return to the vast scope of the previous movies.

The Bottom Line:
If you're a diehard fan of the series and the way the characters have evolved over the previous five films, there's a lot of relationship stuff to enjoy in the sixth installment, but it's hard to forgive the most obvious problems with "Half-Blood Prince" in terms of its pacing, tone and storytelling, as well as the fact that it's deliberately drifting away from what made the previous movies work so well.

Love Aaj Kal - Music Review

Love Aaj Kal - Music Review

Love Aaj Kal’ has many sheds of love, todays as well as yesteryears and so the music of the film has been framed keeping in mind those factors. As it is coming from the house of director Imtiaz Ali, music composer Pritam and lyricist Irshad Kamil who has given Bollywood the remarkable soundtrack ‘Jab We Met’, expectations of the music goers is sky high. Being an experienced actor Saif Ali Khan knows very well how much important music is for any film. As it is his first productional venture, in no way, he will compromise with the story and music. He has done what best he could do to make a soulful music. He has roped in music director Pritam for making the album best in every regard.‘Love Aaj Kal’ has every flavor of music. Romantic, emotional, peppy, fun perfectly tuned and soothing to the ear. The album has altogether seven songs and two remixes sang by versatile singers like Sunidhi Chauhan, KK, Neeraj Shridhar, Mohit Chauhan and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Each and every song has its own specialty and purely situation based. ‘Love Aaj Kal’ is touted to be the hottest film ever and its music the best in the chartbuster. Pritam has left no stone unturned to bring out a poignant music. The first track ‘Aahun Aahun' opens with the sweet guitar string. It is very mesmerizing and catches our ear as soon as it starts playing. The song is a blend of Hindi and English mixture and beautifully synchronized and it is a 100 percent hit in all ways. When the song will come with the picturization then the effect will be double. It will be a treat to watch. Singers Neeraj Sridhar, Master Saleem and Suzanne set the perfect mood of the song with their youthful voice. The remixed version of the song is sure to heat up the dance floor. The second track opens with a light hearted song ‘Chor Bazari’ by Neeraj Sridhar and Sunidhi Chauhan. It’s a peppy number and full of fun. Set in the backdrop of Delhi Chor Bazar, the song gives you a unique feel of the city. Lyric is very simple and Neeraj and Sunidhi have done full justice to the song. It’s a foot tapping number and purely funny, quite impressive. The remix track of the song sounds average not able to impress like the original. The third track ‘Yeh Dooriyan’ touches the chord of our heart on first hearing. It gives the similar feeling like ‘Tum Se Hi’ from ‘Jab We Met’. As well assessed from the wordings, it speaks about distance and separation of the two hearts. Very impressive and sends a feeling of love, pain and separation. Well written and well sang by singer who is known for his romantic best Mohit Chauhan. After hearing, it will entice you to croon again and again as it has a gentle breeze of love. The fourth track, ‘Ajj Din Chadheya’ by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan comes as a gentle breeze. Very peaceful and immediately connects to the soul. Lyric by Irshad is equally captivating. Purely Indian, the song starts with a small alaap. Its runs very smoothly and stays longer with us. You will fall in love with first hearing. The album continues to rule. The fifth track goes as 'Thoda Thoda Pyar'. It’s a marriage song in the voice of Sunidhi Chauhan. It has a feel of 60’s and 70’s shaddi song. It has perfectly created the mood of a Punjabi marriage house with their unique tune and words. Total foot tapping number and the instruments of dholak and tabla were much prominent. Nothing special but sounds like any other marriage song. Here the album scores little low.KK makes his presence felt with the sixth track of the film 'Main Kya Hoon'. It is a peppy number, very fast and full of energy. The next track that follows is ‘Twist’ by Neeraj Sridhar. It is a foot-tapping number with loads of beats and rhythm. Average to hear.‘Love Aaj Kal’ is an album worthy buying and listening. Scores really high and includes all the ingredients to hit the chartbuster. ‘Aahun Aahun’, ‘Ajj Din Chadheya’ and Yeh Dooriyan are the gems of the album.

Yash Raj steals ‘New York’ script, claims Suchitra

Scriptwriter Suchitra Bhatia claims that ‘New York’ was her story which she has penned three years back and even narrated the script to Yash Raj Films Arjun Sablok. Suchitra expressed her shock that Yash Raj has made a film on the script written by her without her knowledge. Her story titled, Osama – A Love Story.Suchita said, “I wrote to Aditya Chopra in August 2006 regarding two stories I had. He asked director Arjun Sablok to get in touch with me. He contacted me and we fixed up a meeting at the YRF studio. On September 1, I met Arjun and narrated two story ideas to him. He was extremely happy with the stories. I still remember him exclaiming ‘Wow!’ I kept writing to him, but there was no response and I gave up as I got busy with other work. To my surprise, after three years, I saw New York and was disheartened to know what they had done: using my story without even informing me, let alone give me any credit.” Suchitra said that she has written to Aditya Chopra and Arjun Sablok but did not get any reply from them. She has registered her script with the Writer’s association in 2006 and filed a complaint with the association. However, Arjun Sablok denies the news and claimed it is nothing more then a cheap publicity by the scriptwriter.

Kareena to kick Saif’s butt

Kareena to kick Saif’s butt

Bollywood goes bold. If Saif Ali Khan has touched Deepika Padukone’s butt in ‘Love Aaj Kal’ and Kareena Kapoor kissed Akshay Kumar 10 times in ‘Kambakkht Ishq’ then why not Bebo can kick Saif’s butt. Yes, in a rare situation, Kareena will kick Saif’s butt in ‘Agent Vinod’. The duo will be seen in an absolute dynamic role performing various types of action. As they are going to play Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in the Hollywood remake of ‘Mrs and Mrs Smith’, the duo is going to do all that Brangelina has done. Like Saif, Kareena too plays a spy in the film. Kareena always desires to play Angelina Jolie in ‘Lara Croft -The Tomb Raider’ someday and her dream has been fulfilled by her beau by offering her ‘Agent Vinod’. Apart from kicking butt, Bebo will go every inch to make her role more convincing then Angelina. To get into perfect shape, Kareena is undergoing rigorous training. She has some striking action sequences with Saif. Confirming Bebo’s news, Saif said, "She does play an undercover agent from another country. Kareena will do everything I do in the film, and she’ll do it even better. She will kick butt better than all the other girls in our industry, that’s for sure".

Deepika regrets speaking about her love

Deepika regrets speaking about her love

Maximum couples in Bollywood prefer to remain tightlipped on their relationship but Deepika Padukone from the first day onwards spoke candidly about her relationship with Ranbir in public but now she is repenting on making her relationship an open matter."When we got into a relationship, we decided to be open about it. Otherwise there would be reports about us being spotted holding hands, kissing, hugging, etc. Since we were so clear about our relationship, we had nothing to hide. I thought people would respect that. But it didn't work out that way," Deepika said.Deepika is very depressed about paparazzi following them and taking their pictures. "We both have families and very respectable families. People who take pictures of us secretly must have families and boyfriends and girlfriends. We've now decided not to talk about our friendship. At the end of the day no one is going to see our films because we're a couple," said the actress.Being a promising newcomer and a couple, she receives many offers with Ranbir as co-star but did not sign any of them yet as they are waiting for the right script. Apart from ‘Love Aaj Kal’, she has in her kitty Sajid Khan’s comedy ‘Houseful’.

DNA test confirms rape charges in Shiney Ahuja case

DNA test confirms rape charges in Shiney Ahuja case

Bollywood News : The DNA report of Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja, arrested for alleged rape of his domestic maid, on Monday has confirmed that the victim had been raped, police said.
"The DNA report has confirmed rape of the victim," said Additional Police Commissioner Amitabh Gupta.
"The report has corroborated the allegations in the FIR that the actor had raped his domestic help," Gupta added.
The blood and urine samples also suggested that the actor was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs when he allegedly committed the crime.
The actor is lodged in Arthur Road jail after a court remanded him to judicial custody for raping the 20-year-old maid at his residence on June 14. He was arrested the next day.
The medical examination of the victim, who hails from Roha in Raigad district, had shown injuries on her private parts.
The medical report of Bollywood Actor Shiney Ahuja had also shown an abrasion on his hand. The victim is just 38 kg while Ahuja is 76 kg. Since Ahuja is double the weight of the victim, he might have easily overpowered and raped her, a police official said.
Also, nail samples of the victim have been sent for forensic tests to gather corroborative evidence in the case, police said adding that the report is still awaited.

Bollywood Music Directors on Micheal Jackson Death

Bollywood Music Directors on Micheal Jackson Death

It was a collective setback for the music industry world over when the news broke around Michael Jackson's untimely death. Musicians and singers from Bollywood were no different as they came together to mourn over the big loss.Pritam - It's a sad day in the history of world music. May his soul rest in peace. We have lost a hero but Michael Jackson is immortal. Through his music, his legacy will live forever. Ironically, I am working on a project which needs funk pop music. So at least ten times a day, I keep telling this to my musicians - 'Let's make it like MJ', 'Let's do it the way MJ would have done it' It's so sad. He was so young. It's so hard to believe that he is no more.Sunidhi Chauhan - Michael Jackson's demise is the biggest loss ever to the music industry.Shankar Mahadevan - No one can fill the musical void that has been created due to his death. We will miss the ultimate performer, the ultimate pop icon, the ultimate combination of mass entertainment and musical brilliance. God bless his soul.Ehsaan Noorani - Michael Jackson, please say hello from all of us to Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane, Jaco Pastorius, Miles Davis, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Rick Wright and to all those brilliant musicians like yourself who are attending that biggest jam session in the sky !!!!! Rock On Himesh Reshammiya - He was a true legend, an inspiration to perform like a genuine superstar. May his soul rest in peace.Vishal Dadlani - I am broken. Goodbye, Michael Jackson. The one thing we never let you be was human. You went from being a God to an alien to a demon, but if we remember you for anything but your music, the failing will be ours. Sorry for all the harassment, thank you for all the music.Shekhar Ravjiani - There can be only one Michael Jackson. It's hard to believe that he is no more. I was so looking forward to his show; more so because it was on the same venue where I had performed on 'Unforgettables' tour with the Bachchans last year. It would have been a surreal feeling to now be a part of the audience and seeing Michael on the same stage. He has been an inspiration for so many musicians out there and is one of the main reasons why I too became one. He has been a true icon.Sophie Chaudhary - It's hard to express this feeling of great loss. An inspiration, a pure genius, a musician par excellence and the greatest entertainer that the world ever saw. I feel privileged to have seen him LIVE four times and heartbroken that I won't be able to see him again. He has touched everyone through his music and will live on forever in our hearts. Just as his song says - "Never Can Say Goodbye"Anand Raj Anand - A magician of dance and music is gone. He saw real success, got the price of success and also paid the price for success. Riya Sen in Nauka Dubi

Riya Sen in Nauka Dubi

Riya Sen finally has a film she can tell her illustrious grandmother the legenadary Suchitra Sen about. In Kolkata for the last 3 weeks Riya has been shooting for Rituparno Ghosh adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore's Nauka Dubi. It's been a career-changing experience for the saucy Sen"I'm sitting with my grandmother telling her proudly about Nauka Dubi," Riya said on the phone from Kolkata. "My entire career I've been known as this sexy chick and offered roles accordingly. I've been dying to do a Bengali film. When Rituda who's currently my bestest friend in the world, offered me Nauka Dubi I decided to put my entire soul into it. I hope it pays off." The role is that of an ordinary Bengali housewife. "Not like my sister Raima in Chokher Bali and Parineeta where she was all dressed in finery. I wear no jewellery no makeup and ordinary cotton sarees in the traditional style." Ritu not only had to teach her how to tie the saree in the routine middleclass way, but also several household chores like cutting vegetables, pouring them intothe vessel, squatting on floor, sweeping and cleaning.Says Riya, "Contrary to my image I love cooking. Raima had learnt all of that for Aparna Sen's The Japanese Wife. And in any case she has that kind of a wholesome image. But what would audiences think when they see me do all this? They'll be so thrilled…And to hear me speak in Bengali. Wow! It's music even to my ears." Initially Ritu had warned Riya her voice would be dubbed. "He thought I wouldn't be able to carry off the middleclass Bengali diction. But when he heard me speak he said he'd retain my voice. That's really cool." Cool, because every Mumbai actress from Kirron Kher to Aishwarya Rai to Manisha Koirala who has worked for Ritu has had her voice dubbed."Raima shared a very special bonding with Ritu-da. Now I share it too."Will we get to see the two sisters together in Nauka Dubi? Sighs Riya, "Unfortunately…no. This is our first film together and Ramie and I don't have a single shot together. When audiences see it they'll know why."Interestingly Raima and Riya have a healthy rivalry on the sets to get their director's attention.Laughs Rituparno Ghosh, "They're both such lovely girls. Riya unnecessarily has a wild image. She's as capable of playing a Bengali housewife as Raima. I adopted Raima long ago. She's my daughter. No one can take her place. But Riya is my niece now. Both the sisters shower me with attention on the sets. I feel blessed."

Aishwarya Rai to Do Karate in Endhiran

Aishwarya Rai to Do Karate in Endhiran

#fullpost{display:none;}
Rajnikant's mega budget next Endhiran starring him along side Aishwarya Rai seems to have garnered a lot of curiosity as the makers are keeping the production a close guarded secret. But the audience interest about it seems to be multiplying day by day as inside details are being leaked out. We managed to find out one such inside info about Aishwarya Rai's character in the film. Our sources reveal, "After having learnt sword fights for her English movie The Last Legion, Aishwarya has been training herself in Karate for Endhiran. A noted stunt master Ramesh who has been running a Japan Shito-Ryu karate school in the South for over 30 years, which is affiliated to the World Karate Federation is training the actress for the movie. Ramesh is teaching Aishwarya the basics of Karate for now. In the movie Aishwarya Rai and the other girls in the film will be learning Karate from her hero. Rajnikant is already trained in Karate so he will not have to train himself. Some interesting scenes were shot recently in the VIT University in Chennai." Aishwarya Rai has always been a quick learner. Even during the making of the The Last Legion Aishwary Rai had trained herself in the sword fight. She took her skills forward in Ashutosh Gowarikar's Jodhaa Akbar. Her trainers have always been enamoured by her quick learning skills. Apparently Ramesh was also charmed that the actress was able to repeat the karate movements easily.Ramesh has also acted in Mani Rathnam's Iruvar (1997) which was Aishwarya Rai's first ever film. He has also acted in over 400 movies made in South India since 1986 with almost all the leading heroes of Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam languages.

Amitabh Bachchan Blog Latest Post : concern for women in sports

Amitabh Bachchan Blog Latest Post : concern for women in sports

Amitabh Bachchan is presently in London shooting for Paa. In his free time he has been exploring London and also managed to experience a few matches of the ongoing Wimbeldon. But then post his viewing experience he has expressed his concern about the disparity between men and women in sports."The large silver golden cup for the men… the semi gold silver tray for the ladies. A disparity here as well, apart from the difference that their prize money entails. I believe a women group is working on the equal distribution of the prize money at tournaments. But for those that continuously make themselves vocal on the disparity and make politically correct noises, let them know that this a manifestation of our age old history and tradition. It may not be feasible to adhere to the sentiment that I have expressed. But for those that scream and shout on the imbalance, that propagate equality for political gain, would they ever wish to take up this issue at all.. I would imagine not. Because… politically it may not suit them." he writes updating his blog.He further adds, "The charge would be that sport is an elitist occupation, certainly as far as its commercialism is concerned and there really is no space for the genuine deserving potentials."Bachchan feels, "Today the Indian Cricket team boasts of several members that have come up from meagre means and from areas in the country that could be specified as small town. Not too many years ago, 90% of the team would be from Bombay now Mumbai. There were facilities and schools for upcoming players. But all that has undergone a sea change. Today 90% of the team is made up of those that belong to small town India. Poor but traditional and a bit conservative. The lure of big money as the IPL's of the world take shape, is a huge incentive for upcoming stars.""One has to wonder then, whether it is the love of the game, or the love of the money behind the love of the game, that attracts. Not an unreasonable argument. So if the money is an attraction for the budding talent, what is wrong in giving equal opportunity to the women of the game and procure incentive for them as well.. And while we are talking equal and incentive, it may be wise to consider at this moment why there is disparity in the reward for their game." Big B concludes.Bachchan Sr. has also hinted at taking a poll on this topic.

Jaswinder Singh New Album 'Yeh Ishq Nahin Aasaan'

Jaswinder Singh New Album 'Yeh Ishq Nahin Aasaan'

Sensational and young Ghazal Nawaaz Jaswinder Singh is back with his new album Yeh Ishq Nahin Aasaan. He is Born to the famous music director Kuldip Singh of Saath Saath (Tum ko dekha toh yeh khayal aaya…) and Ankush fame ( ltni shakti hamen dena daata).1. Tell us about your new album?'Ishq nahin Aasaan' is my third album. It comprises of seven Gazals and one Nazm. All the Gazals are written by the veteran Shayars - Mirza Ghalib, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Jigar Muradabaadi, and the nazm is by Nazeer Akbarabadi. Music is composed by my father and guru Kuldeep Singh. Mood of the songs is light and romantic. Album has the classy poetries with strong content. It is simple Gazal album executed with modern touch. We hope new generation will like it. 2. What it takes to be a Gazal singer? To be a Gazal singer one should at least be rigorously trained classically for eight - nine years. One should have the knack of sher-o-shayeri, correct diction, knowledge of Urdu language and should be versed with Gazals. To attain all this it takes around 10 to 12 years and our generation has no patience. They memorise few songs, enter reality shows and become star. Gazal is indeed a tough genre.3. Are you as romantic as your Gazals?Gazal singer has to be romantic because he sings the romantic genre. The title of my album suggests no matter what you are in love with, be it your work, god or your girlfriend, you have to struggle to attain that love.4. How is your equation with Javed Akhtar and Kaifi Azmi? They are like my family. I got to know Kaifi Azmi through one show, he is very encouraging. Javedji keeps guiding me all the time. 5. Do you think Gazal will ever attain the popularity that of 80s?I am sure gazal ka daur phir aayega. I don't agree that people do not like Gazal. In fact it has to be re-positioned with the support of media.6. As Gazal singer of the Hip hop generation what do you do personally to keep the genre alive? I have done many Gazal shows in India as well as abroad and trust me I have received very good respond from people of all generations. And again through this album I am trying to reach out to them.
